And yet it was the Rolex worn by Ian Fleming, and the one he was most likely thinking of when he decided which watch James Bond would wear. Today, the Explorer is something of an outlier within the modern Rolex sport watch lineup.
With 2021 marking the 50th anniversary of the Explorer II, watch fans awaited a new generation of Rolex's funkiest and oddest sport watch at Watches & Wonders in April. The Explorer II is, after all, a tool watch invented for the highly specific task of spelunking, or cave exploration. Fratello Watches talks about the beautiful Rolex Explorer II reference 1655. A slow mover at first, but sought-after by collectors today. When it was released at Baselworld way back in 2011, the Explorer II Ref.216570 was the first watch from Rolex to utilise their then new Calibre 3187. It was an exciting and innovative movement, and to this day, it still offers a hell of a lot in terms of technicality, benefiting from a Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers, Breguet .

The size, the functionality and the look are all more or less unchanged.The most recent version of the Rolex Explorer II (the 42mm reference 216750) even goes so far as to bring back the large, bright orange, arrow-shaped 24-hour hand as a nod to the original version from the early 1970s.Rolex 16550: Reference 16550 was the first Explorer II in the series to offer either a white or black dial.
