The newer reference brings a slight curvature to their termination, as well as a more even brush pattern that matches the end link of the bracelet, unlike the older model. More importantly, the distance between the lugs has been reduced from 20mm to 19mm. The current reference 124270 is slightly thicker and shorter from lug to lug. But what makes the biggest difference, in my eyes, is that the bracelet starts at 19mm wide and tapers down to 14mm. The bracelet on my Explorer starts at 20mm wide and ends at .
To complement its larger diameter, the lugs of the new 40mm Explorer 224270 are set 21mm apart, and while this does slightly limit the number of available strap options (compared to either 20mm or 22mm), this is the same lug width that you will find on many of Rolex’s other current-production models, such as the Submariner and Datejust 41.
