Fashioned entirely from 18k yellow gold, the Date 5100 featured a large (around 39mm) and thick angular case to accommodate the large Beta-21 movement, a fluted bezel, and an integrated three-link bracelet with wide center links.
The 5100 debuted on June 5, 1970 and initial orders far exceeded Rolex's expectation, with the planned limited run of 1000 watches selling out before production even began. In the end, all 1000 serially numbered 5100s were sold between 1970 and 1972.
The 52 year old jumbo Rolex 5100 was not only the inspiration behind the 41mm Date-Just but of huge historical significance also. The Beta 21 was an emalgamation of several brands (including Patek) hence the 1st quartz movement untilised by any of them, including Rolex.
Rolex's first commercially available quartz watch was the Quartz Date 5100. Introduced in 1970, this watch shared the Beta 21 movement used by other Swiss companies like Omega and Enicar.
