Chanel Antaeus then vs now.
Antaeus has certainly been reformulated through the years. It came out in 1981 so that was inevitable. I've bought two bottles in the past three years and they're both great. In fact, I recently swapped for some vintage Antaeus and I'm liking the recent stuff better.
Old Antaeus is richer and warmer, like the sound of an old vinyl through a tube amp, but years of wear and tear (or aging/oxidization) can muffle the high frequency (or top notes). It was a smash hit when it was released, but has largely faded into obscurity since the mid-90s, when it experienced what was supposedly a disastrous reformulation. As I haven’t had a chance to obtain a vial of the vintage stuff, here’s my take on the current formula. Antaeus is a leather chypre in the same family as Bandit and Givenchy III.Antaeus by Chanel is a Woody Chypre fragrance for men. Antaeus was launched in 1981. The nose behind this fragrance is Jacques Polge. Top notes are Myrhh, Clary Sage, Coriander, Bergamot, Lime and Amalfi Lemon; middle notes are Rose, Thyme, Basil and Jasmine; base notes are Castoreum, Oakmoss, Patchouli and French labdanum. I just got a bottle of Chanel's Antaeus as a Christmas gift from my wife. On first application it was as glorious as ever, but seemed slightly weaker than. Antaeus*, developed by Chanel house perfumer Jacques Polge, begins with the scents of aldehydes, moss and a vibrant “green” note (part sage, part pine needle?) As the aldehydes/moss burn off, I smell a mild leather aroma blending .
