Aurum itself does not tarnish, 18k gold is not 100% Au, it would be too soft to be worn. So the other elements it is combined with, copper, etc oxidize. Hence the tarnish. I bought an early 80s YG Day Date this week. Beautiful watch, but wondered about other experiences/knowledge on patina, specifically on the case and bracelet and dial. The silver dial looks almost like a light champagne, I figure this is normal for older silver dial Rolex watches but was curious.
The tarnish seems to happen on Rolex’s older precious alloy mix. Not sure what the prerequisite is for that to happen but have seen it on older day dates (which are full PM) as well. Here is the tarnishing that happens to mineOnly pure (24K) gold is entirely corrosion resistant. Rolex models from the given period use 18K, which, while unusual, can still tarnish. All he has to do is take this to an RSC and either they’ll tell him it’s fake or they’ll clean up the tarnish.Done correctly, regular cleaning will help you keep your Rolex looking new for many years to come. From washing, scrubbing, and drying to buffing out scratches from the crystal, read on as we go over some top tips on how to clean your Rolex. However, it started running fast (6-10 seconds a day) and was showing some tarnish around the case, so I sent in for a full service. I don’t plan on selling it, ever, so had no problem with them polishing and replacing what needed replacing (only the crown, which surprised me.) it came back looking amazing.
Despite selling relatively well, the Rolex 5100 was abandoned fairly swiftly as Rolex looked to produce its own quartz caliber. In 1977, Rolex launched the Oysterquartz Datejust and Day-Date models with the 5035 and 5055 Calibers respectively. The Rolex Day-Date’s case has been offered in four sizes throughout its life span: Day-Date 36 and Oysterquartz: 36mm. Day-Date Masterpiece: 39mm. Day-Date 40: 40mm. Day-Date II: 41mm. All Rolex Day-Date models come only in solid 18k gold (yellow, white, and rose gold), and 950 platinum.
Rolex crown and indices are made of gold, and should therefore NEVER corrode. Gold may tarnish, but not to that extent. I was just wondering if this is normal for vintage yellow gold day-dates?
