I got this Seamaster at an auction. The case back is either wicked tight or I'm going about it the wrong way, so I can't get to the movement to see anything more than what I have here. The first step is actually to remove the stem/crown. This is a split stem so you need to apply some force to pull it out straight. You already know how to remove the bezel (the ring you describe). BTW - the fact that you can pry it off with a fingernail is not a good sign.
