Because this timepiece has historically been forged out of stainless steel (with a few luxe exceptions), the Air-King is the perfect understated accessory that can easily transition from the office to errands and weekend adventures. This new Air-King entirely repositions the collection – moving into the hallowed halls of Rolex's Professional watch line. With that distinction comes a completely new case. Out is the Milgauss-style body, and in is the case-shape we've come to recognize on the GMT-Master II with its sharp squareness and slab sides.
I was shocked when I woke up this morning to see the new watches only to find that not only was the Air-King not discontinued, but improved upon! They basically took a watch I really liked and made it one I absolutely love.The classic reference 5500 Air-King has a minimalist feature set, and is truly timeless in its design, while the new reference 126900 Air-King is a thoroughly modern watch, and is now fully positioned as one of Rolex’s legendary sports models.
Ever since its unveiling at Baselworld back in 2016, I’ve wanted a Rolex Air-King Ref. 116900. And, perhaps rather oddly, I’ve yearned for this polarising watch even longer than that. Allow me to explain. The Air-King is a unique piece of horology, the kind of purpose-driven tool that has helped cement Rolex's reputation in the past. In this pilot's opinion, it is the best innovation and the best tool watch to be made by Rolex in the last 20 years.
