The Rolex Submariner was the brand’s first foray into professional dive watches that came during a time when scuba diving was still a relatively new sport. Little did the company know that the Submariner would eventually become one of the most famous watches of all time. The first models were officially debuted to the market at Baselworld in 1954. However, Rolex considers the birth year of its iconic dive watch to be 1953, when the first production models were completed. In a word, a legend was born. Upon its release, the Submariner was the first watch in the world to be guaranteed water resistant to a depth of 100 meters – the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was launched prior to the Submariner, yet 50 fathoms (it’s depth rate) corresponds to exactly 91.45 meters. The first Submariner was produced in 1953 and unveiled to the public in 1954 at the Basel Watch Fair. It was not the first diving-specific timepiece to appear on the market.
This is the very first official Sub reference ever produced — with “Submariner” appearing on the dial — and it already featured many of the hallmarks present in the current models. It was announced by the brand in 1954 (even though the earliest examples are dated to late the prior year) and featured a glossy gilt or honeycomb dial.In 1954, Rolex introduced two Submariner models to the public at the Basel Watch Fair. These two models, the refs. 6204 and 6205, were the first watches to be water resistant up to 100 meters (328 feet). A year later, a third version with the reference number 6200 – regarded by many as the ‘holy grail of Rolexes’ – was introduced to the public.
